Report from NYC: Runway’s AI Film Festival 2025
Published: June 6, 2025
By: Kazunori Kurimoto, Executive Committee Member, AI Film Festival Japan 2025
On Thursday, June 5th, I had the privilege of attending the 3rd annual AI Film Festival (AAIFF 2025) hosted by Runway in New York City. As a representative of the AI Film Festival Japan 2025 (JAIIFF), it was an inspiring and eye-opening experience that offered a glimpse into the rapidly evolving global landscape of AI-driven filmmaking.
A Festival on a New Scale
Compared to previous editions in 2023 and 2024, this year’s festival made a significant leap in scale and visibility. Held at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, one of New York’s premier cultural venues with over 1,000 seats, the event drew a crowd of approximately 700–800 attendees. The pre-show atmosphere in the lobby was electric—full of creators, industry professionals, and AI art enthusiasts from around the world.

Highlights from the Screening
Out of over 6,000 submissions (a dramatic increase from the ~300 in the inaugural year), only 10 finalist films were selected. These works spanned a range of styles—from experimental visual poems to speculative documentaries—and demonstrated just how far generative AI has come in the span of one year.
That said, I personally found that 6 to 7 of the finalists leaned heavily toward experimental or conceptual art, leaving limited room for more traditional narrative storytelling. While these avant-garde pieces were undoubtedly thought-provoking, a broader mix might have better represented the full creative potential of AI in cinema.

Ceremony: Brief but Bold
The awards ceremony itself lasted about 90 minutes, including the film screenings. Compared to conventional film festivals, the presentation of awards was relatively minimalist—there were no acceptance speeches or extended commentary from the winners, which made the ceremony feel slightly underwhelming in terms of celebration.
Still, the atmosphere remained optimistic and forward-looking, with a clear focus on pushing the boundaries of technology and art.

A Conversation with Runway’s CEO
After the event, I had the opportunity to speak directly with Cristóbal Valenzuela, Co-Founder and CEO of Runway. I shared details about our upcoming Japan AI International Film Festival, scheduled for November 2025 in Tokyo, and I was pleased to receive his warm support and interest.
Cristóbal emphasized that “millions of people are now creating billions of videos” using generative tools once thought unimaginable—a sentiment that strongly echoes the mission of JAIIFF: to empower creators and foster a global dialogue on the future of film and AI.
